Some History of Beaumont Field (Complements of Cory Weithaus)

As you know, a brief history of Beaumont Field starts in 1922 when the land was purchased from the Burlington Brick and Tile Company (Located where Rice’s Liquor would be now). A contest was held to name the new team established and it was decided on as The Burlington “White Fox”. The clay was dug out to create much of the impression we know now as the field itself. The first game was played on 5/26/1922. The grandstands were built in 1923 and included dressing  rooms and toilets beneath. The name of the field for many years was referred to as “Athletic Park.” As a matter of fact, in the second year of Hilltopper football… all home games were played here. This was due to letting the new Topper Bowl field get a rest for a full year after it’s inaugural year.

On the Burlington Historical Society website, it should show up in a query(keyword: Baseball or Athletic etc.) using this link below. https://burlingtonhistory.org/event-search

I also have attached something Don found years ago of a very, very, distant relative of mine playing (my mom was a Betzig) in a game at the old Fair Grounds in 1885. A very rare hand drawn broadside. The Racine County Fair was held in Burlington for many years, and this was a big event playing “down by the river” during the fair (no Farley pun intended). That field was located near where the old train station was behind the Burlington Mills that are since long gone. I will continue to search for more pics, and have quite a bit of history on the various fields (Central Park etc.) used prior to 1922 for various teams dating back to the 1870’s -present. Stay tuned and hope this helps.
